Going, going…

Posted by jill on May 30, 2007

The music side of this website is going to die down over the next few months, since it’s the summer, and nothing ever happens anyway. But more importantly, I’m off travelling!

If you would like to find out where I am, keep up to date on my new travel blog. I think everyone’s supposed to have one of these when they go travelling or something.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to catch some gigs while I’m jumping from place to place (at least I hope so), if not then no more gigs for about three months! :(

So farewell the Zodiac, you have brought me lots of happy memories (and a few embarrassing ones). When I was 16, my first proper Oxford gig was there, watching Dustball. It was quite apt that my last gig there also featured Dustball.

Yes, your club nights never changed, but going into the smelly, grotty rooms always made me remember how excited I was to go to a club when I was 17/18. Explaining to my parents that gigs finished at midnight, just to sneak that first hour in the club.

When you return under your new name, I’ll have moved away. So in a way this is a farewell to my growing up years in Oxford.

Leaving Oxford is hard to do

Posted by jill on May 10, 2007

It’s nights like the Punt that make me realise that there is a special community in the Oxford music scene. Yes, it does take years to break into it and talk to people (though the alcohol does help), but within this place, there are lots of wonderful people, and I doubt there is any other group of people quite like it. It’s going to be hard to leave this behind when I leave Oxford later this year.

The Punt this year for not a stand out year, I didn’t discover anything new that would take over my gig watching habits, nor did I break my record of number of bands watched in one night (this was due to my late arrival in town and a slight detour at 9 to go and watch some Morris dancing). However the night was great for watching some of my current favourite Oxford bands, Borderville and Stornoway, and for catching a couple of great sets from bands whose live shows previously hadn’t quite worked out, Baby Gravy and Space Heroes.

Above all, I love the Punt for the chance to chat to people, and yell at them from across Cornmarket. At the moment, I’m not too sure if I’ll be around for the Punt next year, but if I’m there can someone remind me not to drink my pints so quickly please?
