March

Posted by jill on March 30, 2007

A month so busy, I still have a backlog of reviews and photos to take on holiday with me, so I can sort them out at some point (probably while on the plane).

A bit quiet on the shows front, but that was compensated by the quality of the acts that I did watch. Jonquil, on Thursday, playing a set with only a couple of songs off the album from last year. Can’t wait for the album due out in the summer (especially if they put Whistle Low and Lions on it). The weekend before was spent watching attractive Scandinavian bands, The Sounds on Saturday and æla on Monday. æla were a complete surprise, but performed one of the most entertaining shows I’ve seen for a very long time.

On the listening side, I’ve been mainly listening to Stornoway, Herman Dune and !!!

Busy, busy, busy

Too busy right now. Anyway, photos are up for Borderville and Baby Gravy at the Wheatsheaf. The plan is to take photos at another couple of gigs this week.

Not too sure when I’m going to find the time for sleep.

PS now updated with The Sounds and Under the Influence of Giants photos.

What a week.

Hello. If you sent me a CD to review over the last few weeks, I AM getting round to it. I just have the matter of 3 job interviews this week to attend to first. The Stornaway one is up already, and hopefully a few more will be up over the weekend.

If not, I promise to work extra hard over the Easter bank holiday weekend to make sure they’re all up.

The Mules, last year

The first time I saw the Mules was at Po Na Na back in 2004, on some soul and funk student night. Through the drudgery of the not very soul like student classics, it was The Mules’ set which made me glad that I stayed out that night, in particular hearing their cover of Television’s Marquee Moon. Fast forward a few years, while browsing through The Hype Machine, I came across a CSS remix of one of their tracks. It’s always weird coming across ‘tiny’ bands in unexpected places, but hopefully (riding on the back of CSS’s higher profile) The Mules will get more attention. The album (due to be re-released this month) is well worth buying.

PS Why are there so many bands giving themselves horse themed names? The Mules, Foals, erm can’t think of anymore
